I saw your show tonight and felt compelled to leave a message! Having worked behind the scenes on a kids proggramme (TOONATTIK gmtv) then moved on to work in politics I've seen the various ways women are perceived in these very different roles. I thought your documentary was truly fantastic and a very honest social commentary on the state of the media and the women in it today. There is no doubt you could have graced the cover of any of those publications but to do so would have been selling yourself short. At the tender- ish age of 25 I grew up watching the likes of you and Sally Gray make children's tv come alive. You're a fantastic role model for young women and if you'd gone through with the shoot you'd have only conformed to the unfortunate and sad tradition that has emerged amongst many tv personalities to make a quick buck and get on. I reckon you're stand up show will be a riot, can't wait for the tour! I hope you find the right opportunity to further your career as you've got so much to give. Don't waste it on the lads mags, use your talent where people get the chance to appreciate the true you! Good luck ;-)

I think you are gorgeous as you are and your decision not to bare all is the right one. lets face it, most people who read those kinds of mags have not yet reached pubity!!!!!

Hi Kirsten, what great and moving documentary. Seeking approval is not sought via a stupid mens photoshoot, but more of an acceptance of who you are. Your mother would be very proud of you for the direction you chose and coming to terms with her sad loss is a most difficult thing to achieve. Be strong, be who you really area and don't ever feel judged by people who don't even know you. Go Girl x

Hi Kirsten
Just wanted to say that you are amazing just being youself. You are beautiful maybe not in the sterio type way on the front of magazines, but i would choose you over any of these girls. Please dont change, you are perfect just the way you are. I wish you all the luck in the future. Take care Peter

I must admit I'd buy the magazine with you on the front page and a photo shoot inside. Funny women are sexy. Get on with the stand up. Being able to stand on a stage and make an audience laugh is a gift I'd pay good money for.

Gaaah! What does that idiot from FHM know? That's just one man's opinion, and here's another; I think you're fabulous. I'd much rather look at you than Caroline whatever and Angelica Bell. You have a gorgeous smile and a body significantly more than "acceptable". And you're living proof that sexy and funny can coexist. Some of us go for the graceless and quirky girl y'know :) and don't listen to your Dad either, i don't want to see you doing newsnight. I want to see you doing saturday evening entertainment gigs or comic relief and things of that ilk. You're an entertainer, not a newsreader.
It's a shame to see you so seemingly insecure and unhappy in your career :( whatever you feel your next step should be i hope it all works out for you. Chin up dollface, keep smiling and stay beautiful :) x x

Caught your "Topless" by accident (honestly).
How refreshing to see an intelligent, witty woman who despite being attractive is self-deprecating.
Wishing you continued success in your career.

I just watched you documentary and I thought you were great. You kept true to yourself and kept your dignity. I think that you are a great role model for young women, as you show that intelligent young women can excel due to their abilities and that they do not have to conform to what makes women "acceptable" in society's eyes. You are amazing!!!

Hi Kirsten. I am so glad you didn't get your tits out. I have grown up with you on tv and it would have been like shagging a best friend, it just wouldn't be the same. I love your work and think you are beautiful and funny just as you are. Please don't change. - Andy xxxx

Hey Kirsten, i have always admired your work on TV, if you were going to go topless, you should think: "did all the other kids' tv presenters go topless?" if you wanted to go big-time presenting, you could just work your way up but you could always just do what you wanna do :)
Best Wishes and luck with your future career!

hi kirsten,
remember you well from kids tv in the 90's and always admired your art work.
I think it is sad that more work can't come people's way without getting there kit off. Your documentary was very eye opening of te lengths people go to to stay in the public eye. Was very glad by your decision and feel you can make it to a more adult orientated audience on talent alone.

Hi Kirsten!!!
I'm a 20 year old student and have ALWAYS admired your work.
I watched the documentary and was really pleased with your final decision. The poignancy displayed was really nice and regularly brought a smile to my face.
The phrase that hit me hardest throughout the program was the "date, shag or pub" dilemma. I would definitely choose the date option. You are clearly a LOVELY person who aspires to be the best she can. I think you're GREAT and always will.
Wishing you the best for the future...

Hi Kirsten!
Just watched the documentary on iPlayer, and immediately came here (after a bit of Googling!) to offer you some support.
Not all of us blokes go for the lads' mag look. Date, pub or shag? I can honestly say that I've never _truly_ fancied a girl with whom I wouldn't want to swig a pint.
Seriously, you're gorgeous, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. An easy grin and a twinkle in your eye goes a long long way with the discerning chap.
Not sure you'd pull off the raunchy look, so leave your norks where they are (not that I'd complain if you didn't) and keep on doing the stand up. As soon as I've finished writing this message, I'm going to find out when you're next doing some comedy in Manc. Good luck!
P.S. 36?! I still find that hard to believe -- I'm 31 and I'd have put money on you being my age or younger.

Hi Kirsten
I'm a 20 year old woman who grew up watching you on childrens tv. I think you're an inspiration to so many young women. It's sad that so many girls are growing up with no real aspiriations or ambition and that their only goal is to use their bodies to get what they want. I think it's ironic that those lads mags were so (wrongly) critical of you when everyone knows given the choice, a man would much prefer a girl with inner beauty. I think you've proved that you should never compromise your beliefs for others. The women that agreed to shoots to bolster their own careers seem to have much less confidence than they outwardly showed. You shouldn't worry about where your career takes you, you're a lovely (and really gorgeous) woman who makes people smile and I'm sure that will take you far!!!

Sorry to go 'off-topic', Kirsten, but are you on Facebook?
Only a 'Kirsten O'Brien' has appeared - hmm, suspiciously like that doppleganger on Twitter - there is a KOB fanclub, which some people think is you, but it does not actually claim to be you.
Oh, noticed you're doing the Latitude Festival, good luck with that.
Nice to see all this positive response to the doco. All the best, mB-)

So that twat Peter Stringfellow and the Lad's Mag's rejected you because they thought no man would want to commit self-abuse with you as a visual aid? Are they gay, blind or both? As an expert in self-abuse, I would beg to differ from their opinion!
Seriously though, your physical beauty (not to mention your charm and intelligence) vastly outshine the clichéd,tarted up and stereotypical images of female attractiveness in most lads mags-if they had you topless (and preferably bottomless) in the centerfold I might bother to buy them!
Or has it occurred to you that you might actually be so devastatingly sexy (even with your clothes on) that perhaps they were being cruel out of spite that they couldn't have you? I guess there is no accounting for male taste-I have known men who worship women I consider very unattractive and ignore ones I find very attractive, so you shouldn't take criticism personally.
As for your ambitions for adult TV presentation, I already watch SMart just to admire you, and think you are criminally under-used and under-rated.
You are vastly superior to all the female T.V. presenters you admire, the only one who has ever come close to your sort of charm was Katie Puckric.
But in fact even becoming a top presenter would be selling yourself short-you should take up acting-you remind me of a young Rita Tushingham in "A Taste of Honey" and that French girl in "Amelie" except even better. As a painter, I know what true beauty is, as a visit to my site on imagekind will prove (sorry, quick plug)
Having mercifully grown out of appalling childhood asthma myself, I can see where you insecurity comes from. Nearly suffocating to death just isn't sexy (except to a few perverts, but we won't go there) and damages your self image, particularly as a sexual being. I am impressed with how you maintain such grace and humour despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

What can I say to you Kirsten that you probably havent already worked out for yourself quite happily in your own head. You are a valid, wonderful, lovely refreshing human being. Your honesty is dazzling, your beauty runs more than skin deep. Thank you for being so brave as to put it all out there, and for not taking it all so seriously that you get depressed by it. We are each put on this earth to do different things and do the best with the time we have have here. Your inspiration to kids through the years I was at home with small ones having taken time out from being a full time business woman were much appreciated by the little people who watched. I dont honestly know what to suggest to you or where to go from here, but I do know whatever you turn your hand to it will be a success. You are beautiful, talented, witty, funny, incredibly honest, and amazingly refreshing in these very superficial cynical times. Dont change. You are perfect as you are. And YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.......... thats fact. Its easy to say ignore what the lad mags guys said, but lets be honest, does anything they say or do have any bearing on your life, our our lives or where you go from here, No......... it has none whatsoever. You are amazing, be happy with who you are. You make my kids laugh something rotten and you have a natural ability for putting people at ease. That is a talen in itself. Stay honest and true to yourself. And you dont need anybody to tell you that you are beautiful. You already know you are. And that is worth more than any validation from any saddo lad mag trying to be funny. All the best. You deserve it. !!!
